Making Movies in the Classroom

Making Movies in the Classroom

Make students work come alive.  Whether it be: Topic Research, Digital Storytelling, Public Service Announcements, Authentic Writing are all opportunities for students to share their work via a movie.  There are a number of movie making programs available.  Some are web-based, others are on a device.  I am providing some introductory info for using Windows Movie Maker for a PC and iMovie on a Mac.

"Grit" as a predictor of success

I attended a PD workshop yesterday, presented by Jim Grant on "The Teacher/Parent Partnership: Meeting the Challenge of Raising Healthy, Happy and "Gritty" Children. I left wondering how "gritty" I am and how one can measure their gritty-ness.  So, I went to find an online tool to see just how "gritty" I am.

I found an online tool here at: The Duckworth Lab at the University of Pennsylvania.
How much GRIT do you have? Take this survey to find out!

During Jim's presentation he shared traits of the 21st Century Mindset and Grit.  I want to learn more about this topic and what I can do to make a difference.  I am going to start by watching this TED video by Angela Lee Duckworth.

Data, Spreadsheets, Charts and Graphs Made Easy

During this *fun* introductory workshop you will engage in a classroom activity designed to teach students about making predictions about a data set, collecting, organizing and analyzing the data and then presenting data in a meaningful way.

During this session you will learn how easy it is to use a spreadsheet program to organize your data and then present it in a chart/graph. You will:

  • make a prediction,
  • analyze our trivial data set,
  • practice sorting data,
  • recording data and
  • taking the data collected create a
    • spreadsheet,
    •  bar graph, and
    • circle graph of the data.

You will become familiar with entering data, using the formatting tool bar, using a formula and creating and editing a chart of your data.

Using online Digital Timeline Tools

Creating a timeline can be fun and time consuming.  Doing it on large sheets of paper can be frustrating.  I recommend trying out a few different online Digital Timeline tools.  I have created a list below for you to try.

Tiki-Toki's free account lets you create a fully-functional timeline that you can share with friends and
colleagues.  You have to create an account to access the free tool. As a student you can sign up and
create and save just one timeline.

TimeToast allows you to create timelines and share them on the web. The process only takes a couple
of minutes and is very simple to use. You have to create an account to access the free tool.
YouTube Tutorial

Dipity
Dipity allows users to create free timelines online. You have to create an account to access the free
tool.
Here's a tutorial.

Time Glider
Time Glider is a web tool that lets you create, collaborate on, and publish zooming/planning interactive

timelines for free.  It is like Google Maps but for time. As a student you can sign up and create and
save three timelines.

xtimeline is a free web-based timeline. Easily create and share timelines with pictures and videos.
You have to create an account to access the free tool.

Brochure Template

Using a Brochure Template.  To create a brochure, often times you will try to start fresh and begin by formatting a word document.  Unless you are proficient with the formatting tools of your application, I recommend using a template and saving yourself the time necessary to setup the tri-fold brochure.

The link below provides you access to a document template that contains the Tri-fold formatting setup.  You will need to replace the existing text with your own text, replace the existing images with your images.  Save the document to your repository (on the U:drive) so you can go back and edit.  Name the file 08COLF-80n-First Last.  (e.g. 08COLF-802-Jane Doe)
